Day Pack
Please Print
and check off the items as you load your pack.
Day packs consist of the minimum
of the equipment you should have with you when performing any activity in a
remote outdoor environment. (While similar this is not the same for Caving or
Marine activities.) This could be in the form of a small back or
shoulder pack or even a fanny pack, The contents should in includes not less
than these components.
Pocket knife of the easy open variety (remember you may only
have one working hand to open it with) or a high quality all purpose tool such
as a leatherman tool.
Provision for making a fire - Waterproof matches - flint and steel - Magnesium
fire starting tool - good full Butane Lighter.- Magnifying lens . Be sure that you are skilled
in using whatever choice that you make and have a good understanding of how to
build a safe and effective campfire. See FIRE MAKING page How
to Make a Fire
Space Blanket - weighs almost nothing, highly reflective material
retains about 90% of the heat energy that your body gives off and bounces it back
at you. It can also double as a rain poncho or even use it's reflective surface to attract attention to
a disabled or lost person. They can also be used to collect rainwater.
Whistle and Mirror - should you need to be found then these
items are worth their weight in gold. See "Using
a Signal Mirror"
String or heavy fishing line can be used to lash a lean-to together,
or a leg splint, and if you take a couple of fish hooks you may be able to catch
some food.
Food bar - even if you do not take any other food you will at least
have 1 or 2 bars with you. Remember that bears can be attracted by the smells of
our foods but are not usually a problem to an active person. However when
sleeping or resting be sure to place all food well away from you in a
downwind direction (so the bear doesn't have to pass by you on its way to food) and possibly up in a tree out of reach.
A couple of heavy duty zip lock freezer bags. Use these to store
water (collected with your space blanket) or foods (see our edible
berries and fruit pages)
Please note that other recommended items such as a GPS, compass, first aid
provisions and a good two way radio tuned to a monitored frequency, are not part of this minimum day pack
but should be.
