This one is a traditional Christmas drink with a bit of a kick to it. It warms both the body and the spirit. Unfortunately this recipe has experienced little use in the recent past as Christmas has become so commercialized that everything has to be ready to consume. No-one bothers with Plum puddings, carrot cakes or double boilers. Hot buttered rum

Surprisingly simple to make and you will blow your friends away when they find that you made it from scratch. 2 quarts of HOT water 2 cups (1 lb) of dark brown sugar - you know this will be good. 1/2 cup ( 1 stick) of BUTTER ( remember this is Hot Buttered not Hot Margarined) 1 pinch of salt - would someone please tell me how big is a pinch. 3 Cinnamon sticks - generally cheaper and fresher in produce dept. 6 whole cloves 1/2 tsp nutmeg 2-4 cups of 151% rum (believe me, 3 cups taste the best) A bunch of Cups, mugs, or seasonal Styrofoam cups Good company, friends, relatives, or business (overnight or all day simmering required) You will need a 4 qt slow cooker ($10 to $20, get one, you will love what you can do with it.) Add the ingredients in the order they appear. Set the slow cooker on low (never on high) and let simmer for 12 hours on low temperature. Do not lift the lid, remember alcohol evaporates before water and lifting the lid reduce the potency of the brew. Cool the concoction (any good cook will tell you that cooling enhances flavor) while you do whatever else it is that you need to do last minute before the get together. Turn on the slow cooker again, 2 hrs before you plan to serve it (serve it hot, this is to be sipped and the aroma savored). **** Remember **** Any alcoholic beverages with a high sugar content is deceiving in as much as it tastes harmless but the sugar boosts your metabolism, consequentially this drinks creeps up on you and then suddenly it clobbers you.
