Current news for
Hinton
Marvelous views of the Eastern
ranges are available from almost any point in this nice little town just
15 miles or 29 km east of the gates to Jasper
National Park. The Roche Miette mountain, visible from Hinton, is a
spectacular sight and appears to be the horizontal bust of a native Indian
chief in full headdress. The mountain has a famous hot spring known as
Miette hot springs and is about a 40 minute ride from Hinton.
Hinton
is a great location to fortify yourself when hunting for the big game that
inhabit the forest in the surrounding area. Fishing is excellent in either the
rivers or the lakes But be sure to check the regulation for the area that you
intend to fish as some areas are closed entirely and in others certain fish
species or bait type is prohibited.
The town is
divided in to two sections the "hill" at a higher elevation and the
"valley" (once called Drinnan) located in the Athabasca basin.
Hinton
has many multi-purpose recreation trails that are designed for Hiking
and
cycling and can be used for cross-country skiing, conditions permitting.
There
is a campground that is apparently free, nestled amongst pine trees in the valley next to the
civic center and a provincial campground at Wild horse lake (also known as
Camp number 1).
The town has no major commercial
attractions such as an amusement park, but does have a pulp mill that offers a 1.5 hour walking tour of
the mill and civic water supply during the summer months. The coal
mines in nearby Cadomin/Luscar area can also be toured. Be sure to see Cadomin
Cave, Soak in Miette
Hot Springs and check out the other
attraction with in driving distance of this scenic town.
Just
a side note: The Editor in Chief of the Wut2 group of websites -
Wayne Smith- spent his childhood years in Hinton and attended school
there up until within 2 weeks of completing the 9th grade. From
there he lived for 8 year in Grand
Cayman and now along with everyone else producing this site,
lives in beautiful Naples
Fl. in the good old USA. Hinton is still considered to be
his hometown, even though he is kept too busy to visit often.
